August 20, 2022 - Mariachi Festival held its 3rd Annual Mariachi concert on August 6, 2022 at Houston’s finest performing arts center, The Wortham Theater.
The sold-out performance delivered on its’ mission of promoting Hispanic heritage and culture through the arts by hosting this first class-event. The well-dressed attendees enjoyed superb performances by Mariachi Pumas from the University of Houston, directed by Jose Longoria; Mariachi 7 Leguas, directed by Fernando Mendoza; and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Ballet Folklórico, directed by Miguel Angel Pena. The highlight of the
evening included performances by winners of the 2022 National Mariachi Youth Vocalist Competition: Kaylee Bucio from Riverside Elementary School in West Jordan, Utah; Alan Aguilar from Patrick Henry Middle School in Houston, Texas; and Jennifer Diaz from Juan Diego Catholic High School in West Jordan, Utah.
“These talented young mariachis impressed the crowd with the quality and passion of their voices, their stage presence and charisma. There is no doubt that all three will become superstars”, says Macaria Mendez, Chair of Mariachi Festival.
Attendees were also treated to stunning photo opportunities as “Catrinas” from Dia de Los Muertos strolled the lobby adding additional flair to this gala event.
“Due to the success of this year’s event, Mariachi Festival will be funding scholarships for two students that are members of the University of Houston Mariachi Pumas”, says Belinda Luna Mendez, Treasurer of Mariachi Festival Board of Directors. “By the end of the evening it was very evident that this event had a tremendous impact in our community. This is the largest formal event in Houston’s Hispanic community with over 2400 attendees.”
Mariachi Festival has already begun planning for the 4th Annual Mariachi Festival which will be held on August 18-19, 2023 at the Wortham Theater, featuring Mariachi Mariposas, an all-female group from the Rio Grande Valley, and Mariachi 7 Leguas, also from the Rio Grande Valley. On April 15, 2023, Mariachi Festival will host an event featuring Mariachi Cobre, the premier mariachi group at Disney World.
